Accessible Mountain Winter Sport Activities for People with a Medical - Health Condition or a disability

Enhance your life or that of someone you know with an adapted or assisted winter mountain sport activity as part of your holiday experience.

(Please note that sometimes the terminology 'disabled ski or disability ski' is used by UK organisations - Ski 2 Freedom and Mountains 4 All use 'assisted ski or adaptive ski')

Explore the empowering benefits of winter snow-sports : blind skiing, sit-skiing, 3-track skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, freestyle, extreme snow-sports, off-piste, telemark, biathlon, heli-skiing – from back-country to ski touring, cross country skiing, ski jeering (behind a horse), dog-sledging, snow-shoe walks, winter nature walks, ice-climbing – the list goes on as you can see!

A ski holiday for a blind or visually impaired child or adult is a magical time. Having a wheelchair accessible ski holiday and taking to the slopes in a sit-ski is an exhilarating experience!

Having Parkinson's or the onset of Dementia/Alzheimer's does not preclude continuing to enjoy life and a ski holiday in the mountains in the right location is an enlightening experience.

Assisted mountain sport activities such as skiing, offer an inclusive, accessible and well-being holiday or trip for everyone but participation and level of involvement will depend on the nature of the physical, additional needs, general health and well-being and cognitive, visual and audio state of that person.

Mountains offer sport, well-being, food and music which helps with rehabilitation, rejuvenation, relaxation and establishing a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence. As early as 460 BC, Hippocrates, the famous Greek Physician and Father of Medicine acknowledged the importance of exercise for strengthening the body, enhancing recovery from diseases, and for prevention and care of mental problems.

There are an enormous number of ski and winter sport instructors and guides, to be found around the world, whose expertise, empathy and enthusiasm are waiting to help you! - either with or without specialist equipment. Some organisations also develop and run adaptive and assisted ski programmes. (Sometimes referred to as 'disabled ski or disability ski')

So what are you waiting for? Click on one of the sports that interests you and find out more about what you can do for yourself or for a family member or friend and start of journey of self-discovery, laughter, excitement and memories! Also don't forget that for some life-changing or other health issues you may only spend a couple of hours skiing or such and so do click on to our ‘Non-Sporting Activities page' to see what else you and the family can do.
