Schladming offers great assisted and adaptive sit-skiing with the help of Freizeit Ski School
Seamus shared his experience of sit-skiing in Schladming (Austria), 2011 - 2012 winter season, previous to contacting Ski 2 Freedom Foundation for further ideas and help for accessible ski resorts
We have skied through the Freizeit organization which is based at the Schwaigerhoff Hotel just outside Rohrmoos. The Planei ski resort is wonderful with 3 great mountains easily accessible/interlinked by car.
Freizeit organization run the adaptive program during summer and winter and as they are based in the hotel making a decision was made easy.
As we are flying from Dublin our initial flights were direct from Dublin to Salzburg with Aer Lingus and we just arranged taxi transfers direct with the hotel approx. transfer time 75 mins and costing €150 each way. now that Aer Lingus has ceased direct flights and Ryan Air did not fly we have had to go via Munich and arrange car hire. The added costs of car hire were partially offset against the cheaper and better flight times into Munich. Though not sure the hassle of car hire and driving is worth it.
Once there we were met at the hotel by the Family Stocker. The Schwaigerhoff is a wonderful hotel. We chose the half board option. The hotel is ski in and ski out with good snow you can actually ski into the locker rooms. The facilities are excellent. The food is superb and the buffet dinner has an excellent wide variety for all tastes. While it was a half board option we had breakfast, soup for lunch and buffet/waiter service dinner. Tables are reserved for the family so you know where you will be at all times. the staff are extremely helpful.
The slopes themselves are wonderful even if just staying on the slope beside the hotel. The ski operators are excellent and work with you to get you into position for the button lifts while on the chair lifts the side entry points give them sufficient time to slow the lifts and to be on hand just in case.
As the lifts and slopes are quiet we normally get to ski together as waiting is just down to a few minutes.“We have skied through the Freizeit organization which is based at the Schwaigerhoff Hotel just outside Rohrmoos. Freizeit have been extremely helpful during the first years. They provide ski instruction, ski hire were good in progressing me from dry slopes to the real thing. It is easy to work on the slopes. My only concern is if you are not getting lessons each day then the availability to hire a ski proves to be an issue, I can understand that they try to save ski equipment for lessons. Seamus
From my Partners Perspective
The instructors who go out with Seamus always accommodate me and are always helpful. We have even ventured to another mountain and the instructor carried the sit ski where necessary and we went in his car.
For the family, I can’t fault it. We can all ski together, as it never seems that busy. There is never an issue with the kids as it is a family oriented resort and safety is paramount.
